newspeak1.jpg
newspeak1.jpg

What the students understand when they finish your lesson with you:

1) Language has a powerful effect on people
2) Comparatively, over time, our society has become similar to Orwell's dystopia of London in terms of language.

Main Standard you are achieving (the number and full description):

STANDARD 3.3 (Speaking) All students will speak in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.

Materials:
1) Pencil
2) Laptops
3) Digital Handouts

Activity (For both students and lesson instructor)

Opening Activity:

Talk and list several words that are often used in texts or instant messagings. Discuss the possible positive or negative effects to changing the English language.

Middle Activity Description:
Read an excerpt from George Orwell’s essay, titled “Politics and the English Language”.
(Below is the link for the essay).
"Politics and the English Lanuage", an excerpt of George Orwell's Essay

Closing Activity:
In truth, words leave a very powerful impression on people. By imposing Newspeak to limit thought, Big Brother is expelling free thought and in doing so, directly negating self awareness and independence.

Book 2:

We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.
"Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"

Book 3 : Torture within the American Federal Government

What the students understand when they finish your lesson with you:

1) The situations in which torture is deemed an "acceptable" means of securing the safety of a country.

Main Standard you are achieving (the number and full description):

A. Discussion

STANDARD 3.3 (Speaking) All students will speak in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.

3) Digital Handouts

Activity (For both students and lesson instructor)

Opening Activity:

Look up the link to a wikipedia page that is refenced by the blacklisted pdf file, "Hi, my name is Samuel Provance and I grew up in Willaimsburg, Virginia." Afterwards, discuss similar tactics found in 1984, and talk about the purpose behind torture.

First read the following lyrics to the song, "Who's Watching Me?" by Rockwell.

Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell
I'm just an average man with an average life
I work from nine to five, hey hell I pay the price
All I want is to be left alone in my average home
But why do I always feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone

And...I always feel that somebody's watchin' me
And I have no privacy
I always feel that somebody's watchin' me
Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night
I bolt the door real tight
People call me on the phone I'm trying to avoid
Well, can the people on TV see me or am I just paranoid

When I'm in the shower, I'm afraid to wash my hair
'Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there
People say I'm crazy, just a little touched
But maybe showers remind me of Psycho too much

That's why...I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Who's playin' tricks on me?

I don't know anymore
Are the neighbors watching me
Well is the mailman watching me
And I don't feel safe anymore, oh what a mess
I wonder who's watching me now?
Who?
The IRS?
I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy I always feel like somebody's watching me
And I have no privacy
Who's playin' tricks on me?
I always feel like somebody's watching me
Tell me who can it be?
I always feel like somebody's watching me

After going over the song and listening to it,
discuss some several other examples of surveillance that is used in our US government.

Discuss some questions:
Do you believe that, in times crisis during war, governments should be able to use torture as acceptable methods for ensuring the security of the country and people?

Main idea of the lesson plan: Winston succumbed to O'Brien because he made Winston face his greatest fear: rats. Indicated by the ending, it seems that Orwell doesn't believe in the saying that the metaphysical power of the mind will always overcome the needs of the physical human body. A person's body is a prison, and what makes Big Brother so powerful is that they have control over people's fears.
